Description
Warsaw's Castle Square (Polish: Plac Zamkowy w Warszawie) is a historic square in front of the Royal Castle – the former official residence of Polish monarchs – located in Warsaw, Poland.
It is a popular meeting place for tourists and locals.
The Square features the landmark Sigmund's III Vasa Column, and is surrounded by historic townhouses.
The Royal Castle in Warsaw (Polish: Zamek Krlewski w Warszawie) is a castle residency and for hundreds of years was the official residence of the Polish monarchs. It is located in the Castle Square, at the entrance to the Warsaw's Old Town.
The personal offices of the king and the administrative offices of the Royal Court of Poland were located there from the 16th century until the Partitions of Poland.
In its long history the Royal Castle was repeatedly devastated and plundered by Swedish, Brandenburgian, German, and Russian armies.
The Constitution of 3 May 1791 was drafted here by the Four-Year Sejm.
In the 19th century, after the collapse of the November Uprising, it was used as an administrative centre by the Tsar of Russia.
Between 1926 and World War II the palace was the seat of the Polish president Ignacy Mościcki.
After the devastation done by Nazis during the Warsaw Uprising, the Castle was rebuilt and reconstructed.
In 1980, the Royal Castle, together with the Old Town was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Today it is a historical and national monument, and is also listed as a national museum.
The King Sigismund III Vasa Column was built in 1644, It is the oldest and one of the symbolic monuments of the city (a work by Clemente Molli).
This square has been the scene of many dramatic events from Polish history.
There have been patriotic demonstrations during the period before the outbreak of the January Uprising.
On February 27, 1861 russian bullets killed five people.
On April 8, 1861 five rota infantry and two troops of russian cavalry (about 1,300 people) led by General Stiepan Aleksandrowicz Chrulew carried out a bloody massacre of civilians, resulting in more than 100 people dead.
During - imposed by Jaruzelski's regime - martial law the Castle Square was the scene of the particularly brutal riots by ZOMO police rushing against demonstrations on May 3, 1982.
